Re: Pics of my First 928 and Current Project
I just got off the phone with Mike at Motorworks and it depends on the condition of the cylinder. I will still have to strip to bare block. If the bad cylinder can be honed then lapped; it will cost $100 <---awesome deal. Now, if the cylinder is beyond repair, they will have to bore, slip in a new sleeve and hone then lap; it will cost $600 <--yikes! Now if I have the sleeve replaced and have all the other 7 cylinders rehoned and lapped; it will cost between $750-$800 <---yikes, yikes! I guess either way, I am going to break down the engine, have Motorworks look at it and then decide. Although, it looks like a good used running engine will be the key to success in my situation.

I suggest you get a total cost of parts etc. before you take too many steps down any path. My understanding is that 95mm rings are about 2.5 times the cost of 97.5 and 100mm rings.
OTOH I am spending money like a drunken sailor on my beater 928, so I shouldn't talk.

Exactly why I made the last line comment. I am really steering towards a whole other engine. The original engine needs a new piston anyways. Could you bore the current sleeve to the higher specs? 97 or 100mm? I believe 95mm rings are around $80 a hole, which I was only going to do the damaged one if I go that route.

Re: Pics of my First 928 and Current Project
I need some space in my garage, find a way to come and get my 79 block in the next week and you can have it for $50, which has to be close to the value as scrap. I need a good oil pan, the one on it, or one you have, and its a short block, no heads, cam, or intake, but it turns just fine. Previous owner said it smoked, but my guess is that was due to valve guides. No promises, but its cheaper than lapping one cylinder, and you can look it over all you want first.

3 cans of Engine Cleaner and 2 cans of Carb Cleaner. Looks real decent. I painted some of it low gloss black already, but still had some wet spots so I will do more painting today. Had to do yard chores this am. Hows the 928 hunting? Get that garage door squared away, so we can start test driving some 928's!! Get Al to make an offer on that Black 928!!

Looking much better! So, does this mean your long term goal is to paint the whole car black?
