Post Why the 'S4' at the end of 928?
Was wondering What the S4 means at the end of the 928 name... Are all 928's also S4s, or did the S4 come later in the model years??

It was the progression of the Models. 928 then 928S then the S2 and S3 then the S4 then the final GTS in 94. The S3 was the first 32 valve 928 made in 85 thru 86, 86.5 being the OB (Old Body) with S4 Brakes and Suspension.

Well, thanks to this thread, I just learned that my 1985 928S is actually a 928S3 and has S4 brakes and suspension.....sweet!

I'm not certain the 85 had the 4 piston brakes like the S4. That all started on the 86.5 models, which is why they are sought after. Take a pic of your calipers and I can tell you.

Oh yeah, you could be right about that then - cause I'm pretty sure my calipers are standard 2-potters. What were the suspension changes that the 86.5 had over the 85/86? I think the suspension is very good on mine, even if not S4.

Not sure since I don't have an S4, but all the 928's have great suspension. Except the early 928's didn't have adjustable shocks on the front. Plus the non-S have very small brakes and very very weak. The S have great brakes, but the S4 are better with Brembos. I am in the process of changing out my 81 Euro front brakes to the S4. I'm going the adapter route. I have all the pieces but no time to do it.

I'd like a nice shiny red set of 4-pot Brembo's on my 928S but I'll just settle for new pads and painted calipers for now.
